What: ACMA’s media release - DNS Changer trojan
When: Released 29/03/2012
Duration:
Impact: A media campaign has commenced by the ACMA, regarding the DNSchanger Trojan.

Some of our customers that see this campaign may be concerned about whether they are affected, or how they can prevent infection by this trojan.

This issue affects any ISP and is not limited to Optus. If you are concerned, you can browse to www.dns-ok.gov.au for a ‘health check’

It recommended to use an AntiVirus Program which is kept up to date.

Our online help has more information about internet security http://optus.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/109, including a link to our Optus Internet Security Suite in the 'Internet protection: anti-virus & firewalls' sub-heading.

What: Spam / Hoax Emails
When: Ongoing
Duration:
Impact: There has been an increase in Optus customers been targeted with a variety of phishing emails. These emails are a hoax and are not sent by Optus.
Additional Info: These emails can come in a variety of forms that includes:

- Asking you to click on a link that may take you to a false Optuszoo website, prompting you to login.

- Asking you to reply to an email that does not reply to an @optusnet.com.au email address

- Asking you to provide personal information such as: full name, date of birth, password

A lot of times these hoax emails will say that if you do not follow the instructions, your internet account will be closed.

Optus will NEVER ask customers for a password via email.

To report these scams and phishing emails to Optus, please visit our online help at http://optus.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/109#Reporting

You should then delete them, without replying to the email. This just verifies your email address as an active target and may lead to you being featured on spammers lists.

If you have replied or given out your password, you should change your password immediately, via Members Services, or contact support on 133 937

What: Optus News Server removal
When:
Duration:
Impact: Optus has previously provided usenet service (Optus Newsgroup) to customers. However, following evaluation of the services that we offer to our customers, and the declining usage of usenet by our customers over the past several years, it is no longer viable to continue to provide this service. As a result, the usenet service is in the process of being disabled and removed.

This service will close as of 21/11/2011.

If you still want to use usenet, there are a number of commercial usenet providers that will be able to provide this service to you.
